Required Windows XP Local Policy Settings for Remote Administration

The following article describes the necessary local security policy settings to apply on a stand-alone Windows XP machine to successfully administer remotely.


Stand-alone (workgroup) Windows XP machines have a default set of security policy settings which prohibits remote administration. By default, local accounts cannot be used to remotely authenticate on a stand alone Windows XP machine. Consequently one cannot remote access the registry or administrative shares on that machine. This article describes the local security settings to change to order to re-enable remote administration of a stand alone Windows XP machine.


A stand alone Windows XP machine not configured for remote administration will exhibit the following:

If you attempt to remotely connect to the machine’s administrative shares (i.e.: C$, ADMIN$) or registry or services database from a Windows Vista or newer computer, Windows prompts you for alternate credentials, however no credentials will work.

Changing the Local Security Settings

The following instructions must be executed on the Stand Alone Windows XP machine(s).

Select Start >> Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Local Security Settings
Select: Security Settings >> Local Policies >> Security Options
Select the Network Access : Sharing and security model for local accounts and set it to: Classic – Local Users authenticate as themselves
Select: Security Settings >> Local Policies >> User Rights Assignment
Make sure that the Access this computer from the network policy includes the Everyone or Administrators account.
Close the MMC program.
Once these settings have been applied, try using Goverlan to remotely administer the machine and enter local administrative account information when prompted. If you need further assistance, please contact our Support Team.
