Ping Monitors

one ping onlyPing monitors are a very easy way to ensure your critical servers and machines are up and running. There are a ton of free ping monitors out there, and if you are a Goverlan customer there are some pretty nifty little tricks to build some great monitoring tools.

Our very own Victor Cruz used Scope Actions to put together this quick ping monitor with some nice tweaks. Here are the results first!

The Results

Once the following is all set up and running, you will get email notifications when a critical machine is not pingable. Read further down and see how to set this up in minutes.

Setting it up

  1. Create a new Scope Action
  2. In the Scope section, add any machines you want to monitor
  3. Configure the Action section as follows:

In the Action section:

  1. 2015-08-27_13-53-08Add a report action for Computer Property.Is pingable
  2. Add a Execute Actions for Send Email
    1. Add your email address in the To Email field and provide sending server details.
    2. Select Subject then click Set Dynamic Value Definition(upper left hand corner)  and insert the following text: **WARNING** {Computer:NT Account Name(0)} IS NOT PINGABLE**
      Note: You will need to press the INSERT key to insert the portion that is in parenthesis.
    3. Select Subject then click Set Dynamic Value Definition(upper left hand corner) and insert the following red text: This is to inform you that {Computer:NT Account Name(0)} did not respond to ping.
      Note: You will need to press the INSERT key to insert the portion that is in parenthesis.
  3. Add a Computer Condition for Computer Condition.Is Pingable = false
  4. Create a schedule to have the monitor execute as often as necessary.
